duty cycle, peak power per pulse and energy per pulse?
Please help me to figure out the solution to this problem. The answer is given after the question
The output of a cw pumped Nd:YAG laser is Q-switch at a pulse repetition frequency of 10 kHz. If each pulse is 50 ns wide and if the mean power output is 10 W, calculate
a. the duty cycle [5 x 10-4]
b. the peak power per pulse [2 x 104 W]
c. the energy per pulse [0.001 J]
The duty cycle is the fraction of time that the light is on. You said that the pulse is 50 ns wide. The period between pulses is the inverse of the frequency: 1/(10 kHz) = 10^-4 seconds. The light is on for 50*10^-9 seconds out of 10^-4 seconds, or 50*10^-9/10^-4 = 5*10^-4
The peak power is just the power required to give you an average power of 10W if the light is only on for the duty cycle 5*10^-4 of the time.
Paverage = Ppeak / duty cycle
You can do the algebra.
The energy per pulse is just the peak power times the time it is on, which is 50 ns.

For second harmonic generation what role do laser properties play in determining the Nonlinear crystal used?
For example how do the laser properties:
Beam size, Laser power or energy, bandwidth and divergence
determine the type of crystal which is used in say an Nd:YAG laser requiring SHG at 1064nm.
Generally, there are 2 considerations for SHG. The first is the center frequency of the output/source beam. The second is whether you will use a single polarized beam, or two orthogonally polarized beams.
It is generally the desired output frequency which will dictate the crystal you will use for SHG. You will need to have a crystal with a bandgap equivalent to the desired output frequency. Whether you use a single or double beam is based on the atomic structure of the crystal (of appropriate gap).
Monopotassium phosphate is one crystal which might be used for a Nd:YAG source.
