Wood Engraving Pencil
Burning color into wood?
Is it possible? I'm doing an art project and asked the teacher if I could just do whatever I wanted with it and he told me I could, but he lacks in knowledge of art and wood so I went to my other art teachers.
I'm going to be using a wood burner to engrave the outlining of my sketch into wood, but I was just wondering...is there anything you can put on the wood or something that would actually burn color into it. Like, instead of it just being black, make it a dark red, or a dark green, ect. I've looked it up can't find a thing.
All I've gotten so far is after the burning, go over with oil based pencils, water color paint, or watered down acrylic wood paint.
Any ideas at all, I just thought it'd be a cool idea. I thought of sugar but when that burns it just goes black and I can't imagine that working to well. Are there things I can use that when burned turn a color and might and some cool texture? I really don't know, I'm just exploring ideas out :]
you lucked out...i'm a sign carver.
you can do all kinds of things in wood. the woodburning tool is good for outlines but not for color. u can use inexpensive craft paints that are water soluable for painting.it's best to use solid wood rather than plywood. you can ask for scraps for free from your local lumber yard. Balsa wood is easy to carve but doesn't take paint very well. boxwood is the best but pine and spruce work well.
you can do shallow carving (like bas relief) with an xacto knife or more sophisticated chip carving knives.
