Wood Engraving Hobby
what tools should i get to start engraving wood?
I have started woodwork as a hobby and after some simple jobs eg window seat, table and chairs etc i want to develop further. I want to engrave patterns, images, lettering and designs onto wood but i don't know how to go about this or what tools i should use any idea please?
If you want to engrave then you can use hand chisels or a dremel tool. However, I would recommend that you invest in a chip carving instruction/pattern book and two chip carving knives. The chip carving knives, and there are only two different types that you need to buy, are inexpensive and you can create really intricate patterns with only a little practice. The results will be much more pleasing then simple engraving. Google chip carving images for some examples of the amazing designs that you can create with these two little knives. And it doesn't take very long to develop the skills to create even the most intricate designs.
