Trestle Table Ensures Beauty And Practicality
The Trestle Table had to begin somewhere and a search of the history shows that it was in use in ancient times. Early American settlers and families moving to the Western Frontier adapted it to fit into their particular situation. In covered wagons they were very convenient as they enabled pioneers to use them along the way. Today's manufacturers produce beautiful renditions of this furniture which are now available on the Internet.
In ancient times royalty demanded special treatment. In the Middle Ages they would order special furniture made, including matching chairs as a sign of their station in life. As a result, they received tables that were very ornate, yet practical for the many banquets they gave as well as for their personal use. The ordinary man of that period also used this type of table, but it usually consisted of a crude board or boards placed over wide supports.
It is easy to see why these tables became popular and have remained popular over the years. Simply made of a horizontal beam and two spreading legs for support, it has beautiful finished wood placed on top giving the appearance of natural wood. Not having four legs to contend with is of great benefit to one's guests at a dinner party.
These tables are very popular today and come in many different woods, such as red or white oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and hickory as well as in various styles. Many have leaves which allow a wide extension to 90 inches. It is possible to match any home's decor with an attractive addition of one of these tables. Tuscany and the Victorian Era are very popular in home decorations these days and this table fits in very well as it can be traced to these different eras.
It is possible to select one to fit any decorating scheme. If the room is oddly shaped it is possible to select oval, round, rectangle, or square models. In an office situation, a very long, wide unit is available and is preferred due to the large number of people who are usually in attendance in meeting situations. This eliminates problems when legs interfere with comfortable once seated.
Although many different woods are used in the construction of these tables, special colors are also popular in today's tables. Black goes especially well in anyone design utilizing an Urban Chic theme. Antique white works very well in presenting a farmstead or European style. For the office, usually ebony or very dark wood is preferred and many different styles are available.
The type of trestle tables varies from bar height to work table. Their durability is well-known and many that belonged to great and great-great grandparents can still be found in today's homes. With care, through the years, their beauty has grown and they are a beautiful sight to behold. For the work table, some were and are used in the kitchen area. They are very convenient as a place for a brief snack and often are accompanied by matching benches.
Very few of the old world tables are in existence today, but one can be found at the Ridjksmuseum Amsterdam-Museum. There one can view a Trestle Table that was made in the 1600's in Spain. Covered with exquisitely engraved silver tops, resting on bases covered with ebony veneer, it is an outstanding example of the work of that period.
