Engraver Engraving Machine
Crusader quotes to put on a sword?
I have just finished forging a sword that replicates a sword used in the Crusades with a thick,straight guard, round pommel, so on and so on... Anyways. I would like to use my CAM machine (An engraver) to engrave some latin,or whatever language was used, which i believe was latin, phrases from the crusades, particularly phrases related to Christianity. I would like a phrase to circle in a U around the bottom of the pommel, and (preferably) a similar or corresponding phrase to go across the guard. Thank you in advance!
You could use Constantine's motto. In Latin, it is "In hoc signo vinces." It is said that it was revealed to him in Greek--it's referenced in the first link below, since I am too lazy to type the Greek characters.. It means, "In this sign you shall conquer." So then you can have a Latin quote and its Greek translation. Constantine also saw what is now called the "Chi Rho" cross, which is the symbol that looks like a capital letter P with a capital X below it.
You could also use two Latin quotes from the beatitudes: beati pacifici (blessed are the peacemakers) and beati possidentes (blessed are those who possess). Or caelitis mihi vires (my strength comes from heaven). I seem to remember from a book about the Crusades that some crusaders used the phrase "for Christ and the Church" (Christo et Ecclesiae) as personal motto.
And then, there's "Carpe Cerviasem." Seize the beer!
