Has anyone ever purchased an Art Router? (http://thommcarr.com/) I've been talking with Thom about getting a slightly modified one but I couldn't find any reviews on the internet. I mean for what it is it seems like a pretty great price, I just don't feel like getting scammed. Thom seems like a really nice guy, I suppose it's me just being over-precautionary.
Thanks,
Joe S.
Joe, I am going to be in Milwaukee tomorrow. I made plans to meet Thom and take a look at his machines in person. I can keep you posted on what I see. I too am always cautious on purchases like this from unknown manufacturers.

Update: Due to an illness in Thom's family, he has to reschedule. I'll let you know.

I have Autodesk Inventor 11 how do i convert a part to G-code?
I have Autodesk Inventor 11 and I’m in the process of building a CNC router. I have software to run the CNC but it uses .DFX files or something like that. My question is how I get a part that I made in Autodesk to the CNC program. Any help would be great. I’m only 16 and do not have formal training in this stuff. I am a wiz when it comes to using Autodesk Though. And my CNC is really cool it has a cutting area of 12” x 10” x 4”. But none of these maters if I can’t get the part loaded into the machine. Adam, I got a free copy from Autodesk. After taking this pre engineering class my sophomore year. They thought it would be nice for everyone to have a copy. Luckily I have a bad ass computer to run it on. To answer your question, I don’t know where you could buy it but I here its expensive.
I do not know really, do u know where I can buy autodesk inventer 11 please reply ASAP.

Laser engraving history: It was in the early sixties that scientists first discovered they could create a light source, focus its energy and have a tool powerful enough to affect a wide range of materials. You can think of a laser as a light source that's similar to a light bulb. A light bulb will emit energy all around it.
The favored marking method is by laser when permanency or aesthetics are called for. And with advanced software today you can laser engrave practically anything including Bar Codes, 2D codes, photographs and company logos.
Unlike the conventional engravers some use an intense beam of light instead of a rotating or vibrating tool. This beam can either vaporize a small area of the surface called laser engraving or cause a change in surface color of the material called laser marking. The beam is controlled by a computer at high speeds and accuracy to give exceptional quality at a very cost-effective price. Sometimes marking is referred to as laser etching. Unlike conventional etching, needs no masks or chemicals.
Like many inventions in our recent times, lasers were first conceived in the laboratory. There are many advantages to using a laser over other methods of engraving. Because the tool is a beam of light, there's no contact with product, which means less chance of having product damage or deformation.
The metal cutting option can easily be added to some of the laser cutting machines. Engraving metal uses the most power especially if it is the harder type.
Laser etching can take place on many materials including slate, granite, stainless steel, leather, arborite, glass, mirrors, premium hardwoods and on graphite it's a clean operation.
Laser cutting adds high precision, less contamination or warping and quality finishing to industrial cutting applications. The ability to cut complex profiles can totally eliminate the need for added operations, making it highly economical.
A few of the items that CO2 laser systems can be used for regarding marking and etching glass or quartz are float glass plants, manufacturing of glass doors and windows. There is also permanent serial numbering, ANSI safety information, customer logos, decorative or specialty glass manufacturing, manufacturing data related to plant, production date and line, and/or part numbers. You can easily mark in batches of from 1 to 10,000. Marking of glass by CO2 lasers while moving can be an excellent add-on for many industrial environments and applications.
Laser marking is a process in which the material is indelibly marked at fast speeds (milliseconds per character). It's also favored when the part to be marked is too small or has too complex of a shape to be marked with anything except laser etching. Industries that use it include the promotional, engineering and medical industries.
Amid the many items being engraved today, iPods and laptops rank among the highest in the marketplace. Some of the products include wedding giveaways, nametags, table nameplates, trophy and wood engraving.
Laser engraving can be used for the kind of jobs carried out by conventional industrial engravers. Engraving machines are common today. And services are available in specialty stores because it's the most common type of engraving today.

Cherish a Thought: Engraved Gifts to Capture the Imagination
Sometimes it's hard to find the right gift. If you're struggling to get a gift that carries the meaning you want, - don't despair though. There are tried and tested ways to spark someone's imagination and offer them a constant reminder of how much you love them.
After all, when you're getting someone a gift you want them to feel loved and cherished. Engraved presents offer so much, they can capture your imagination, deliver a message, sparkle in a display case and also be useful. In this article, we'll delve in to the history behind engraved gifts but also look at why and how they've stood the test of time.
Engraved in History For tens of thousands of years people have given each other engraved gifts that deliver meaningful messages of love and respect. Presents have brought people together throughout the ages. From the very earliest civilisations it's believed that all manner of gifts were passed between people to show love, respect, admiration and affection.
Sometimes these were food, tools or clothing, though often people would also give each other sentimental tokens such as jewellery and engraved cups or bowls. In fact, engraved gifts have been a popular gift in various cultural ceremonies for millions of years.
Engraved metal artifacts have even been found by archaeologists that date back as early as one million years BC. It's believed that these simple rings and cups were turned in to engraved gifts using crude engraving tools and presented on special occasions.
What's more, engraving is actually mentioned in the Christian bible, with a high priest of Israel wearing a lot of engraved finery (Jer 17:1). In the Middle Ages, European goldsmiths created beautiful engraved gifts and items intended for the home. They engraved intricate scenes and patterns in to cups, bowls, jugs and vases.
Then, in Ancient Rome and Greece, engraved gifts became even more popular and desirable. They would be commissioned by wealthy Grecians and Romans and kept in the home, often on display.
Precious Etching Since then engraving has been applied to all kinds of items, and industrialised. From picture frames and tankards, to trinket boxes and champagne flutes, there are so many items out there which can be useful, attractive and also remind loved ones how much you care. Most cultures, the world over, still give engraved gifts at special times of the year.
As engraving technologies have advanced, etching has become increasingly fashionable and since the 19th century it has been used to mass produce images for printing in books and magazines. To this day some etching is still used in the printing industry because it is so highly detailed that even modern printers find it hard to compete. Modern technology cannot reproduce images at the same high quality and maintain the level of detail which etching can.
In the gift industries, all manner of engraved gifts are still sold. Some are available with precious, personal messages on them and others are engraved with sentimental or pretty designs.
It's easier today to find elegant and interesting engraved gifts than ever before. And, many items still have the same level of craftsmanship which would have been appreciated in ancient Greece or Rome.
Marvellous Messages The real appeal of engraved gifts has to be how personal they can be. The messages which can be cut in to the glass or metal are immortalised. Rather than just being there for one generation, a lot of items which were engraved in the 1600s (and later) were fated to become family air looms.
Pocket watches with meaningful inscriptions were passed from father to son and engraved wedding bands were passed from grandmother to granddaughter. Because of these traditions engraved gifts have an air of romance and an ageless elegance.
Present Day These days there are still traditional times when we might opt for an engraved gift over all others such as a silver wedding anniversary. However, they make great presents all year round.
Engraved cufflinks with the recipient's initials can be a superb gift for a young man or distinguished gent and come in useful for weddings and formal arrangements.
Meanwhile, engraved champagne flutes make fantastic gifts for couples; they can be a brilliant wedding gift for example and can be used year after year on the happy couples wedding anniversary.
The messages which people choose to include on engraved gifts are often less grand or more whimsical these days. However, the intention is probably still the same as it was millions of years ago.
Engraved gifts are still just a way to say you love someone.
