Laser engraving is the practice of using lasers to engrave or mark an object. The technique can be very technical and complex, and often a computer system is used to drive the movements of the laser head. Despite this complexity, very precise and clean engravings can be achieved at a high rate. The technique does not involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out. This is considered an advantage over alternative engraving technologies where bit heads have to be replaced regularly. The impact of laser engraving has been more pronounced for speciallydesigned laserable materials. These include polymer and novel metal alloys Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 84 Publication Date: 2010/04/24 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.20 inches

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Subsurface scattering (or SSS) is a mechanism of light transport in which light penetrates the surface of a translucent object, is scattered by interacting with the material, and exits the surface at a different point. The light will generally penetrate the surface and be reflected a number of times at irregular angles inside the material, before passing back out of the material at an angle other than the angle it would have if it had been reflected directly off the surface. Subsurface scattering is important in 3D computer graphics, being necessary for the realistic rendering of materials such as marble, skin, and milk. Most materials used in realtime computer graphics today only account for the interaction of light at the surface of an object. In reality, many materials are slightly translucent: light enters the surface; is absorbed, scattered and reemitted potentially at a different point. 1. Lightscribe or labels are pretty much the closest you'll get with a home computer for a decent price.

The dymo disc printer is the cheapest alternative to those options I could find, and it reviewed okay on newegg. It looks as though there's some trial and error regarding what CDs and settings combinations turn out well. I would assume the ink cartridges for this are expensive and proprietary.

As for me, I'll stick to a sharpie, but if you really need to print labels, these are probably your best options.
