River Rocks Engraving
anyone know if rock engraving is a profitable business for a single entreprenuer?
I'm looking into buying a beginners rock engraving starters package to begin carving into river rocks and other rocks and was thinking about this as a possible side business for myself? Anyone know of good places to check for rock carving supplies that are inexpensive? Thanks for any help!

How do I polish & engrave a rock I found?
I found a rock shaped like a heart in the river when kayaking over the summer and want to get it polished and engraved. It is about 3 Inches from top to bottom and just under 1/2 an inch thick. It is shaped just like a heart. It will be part of a gift. I'm mainly wondering about the polishing part. Also, what are price ranges I'd be looking at? Where would I go for this?

Some rocks will never polish up to a glossy shine depending on the density and mineral content. Your best chances are with some igneous and metamorphic rocks or crystals. Softer sedimentary rocks are not the best candidates for polishing.
If your rock is of a suitable type for polishing then using a rock tumbler is the easiest way to go.
If your rock isn't suitable for polishing you could always lacquer it to give it a similar feel and appearance.
Engraving the stone may be done with a Dremel tool and special hardened bit.
You probably don't want to buy a rock tumbler for doing just one stone so you might try to find a hobbyist willing to do you a favor. Rock collecting and tumbling is a fun hobby, especially if you have kids, so if you were interested in getting a tumbler you could find a hobby version starting in the $50-$75 range. You will need additional supplies (various sanding grits) that may cost you another $10 or so per load of rocks you tumble.
By the way, if you do put your heart shaped rock into a tumbler do it on its own, not with a collection of other rocks. Usually when you use a tumbler for polishing you try to fill it with rocks of similar type and hardness. If a softer one is in the mix it may get chipped and damaged badly by the other harder stones.
