Great Things To Do In Porto
Cheap Porto Airport Rent-A-Car
Porto is a cultural hotpot and offers visitors a wide selection of attractions. It is possible to tour the numerous churches and cathedrals, which can be found across the city, or visit the many museums documenting the city's history. You can marvel at local works of art in the many art galleries or enjoy the extremely impressive and varied architecture found across the city.
Porto Cathedral
This magnificent cathedral was built in the 12th century in Roman style. Since it was first constructed, it has been modified many times, with the original architecture being transformed. The cathedral's interior is home to some wonderful paintings by Nicolau Nasoni as well as the silver altar of the Holy Sacrament and the ‘Fat John' Chapel. Next to the southern tower, you will find two measures engraved in the stone. These are the remains of a medieval fair which took place in the cathedral's large and beautiful grounds.
Clergymen Church and Tower
This church is a testament to Baroque architecture. It was built between 1754 and 1763 by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. The church's tower soon became the symbol of Porto and is still an icon today. The tower has six floors and is 76 metres high. You can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy the spectacular views across the city.
So Francisco Church
This church is one of the few medieval buildings that are still standing in Porto and is also the only Gothic-style church in the entire city. The construction of the church began at the end of the 14th century and carried on into the beginning of the 15th. During the 16th century, João Carneiro ordered that this chapel was built by Diogo de Castilho. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the interior of the church was decorated with wood carvings. It is now commonly regarded as one of the most stunning Baroque interiors in Portugal.
So Bento Station
This magnificent station was built on the original site of an ancient convent when it was constructed in 1916. Today, it is only used for regional trains, but it is still very busy. Inside the station, the mosaic tiles reproduce historical scenes and add a unique beauty to the station.
Stock Exchange Palace
This Baroque palace was designed by Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th century. The interior is full of fascinating Baroque carvings and other beautiful décor. It has become a national monument and is one of the city's most visited sights. The palace is most notably remembered for its Arabian Hall.
Dom Luis I Bridge
In 1879, the government hosted a competition for people to design a bridge, which was to cross the Douro River. The winning design was by an engineer named Teófilo Seyrig. The construction work began in 1881, and the launch took place on the 31st October, 1886. The breathtaking arch is a staggering 45 metres tall and is an imposing sight. The bridge offers great photo opportunities.
Ribeira
This ancient quarter of the city can be seen from the river. It is full of narrow and winding streets as well as traditional houses with colourful exteriors, which preserve the charm of this historic area. The quarter is full of contrasts and character. By day, it is a perfect place to wander around while enjoying the peace and quiet. At night, the Ribeira comes alive with restaurants, bars and clubs, full of people looking for a good night out.
