Is it wrong for me to abort a plasma donation when asked if phlebotomists can fish in my other arm?
Just a few minutes ago I was donating plasma. The machine was kicking on and off, the needle was vibrating in my arm, and it was readjusted 2 times. Then, the person attending to me and 5 others told me that he wanted to try to prick my other arm.
When he asked me that I was already there for 50 minutes, and was at 390/825 ML of plasma. I told him no and he told me that there was a chance that I would be deferred if I did not cooperate.
What's the deal? They chose the stupid vein.
One simple rule in medicine....if you feel like you are being treated in a fashion you would consider WRONG....then chances are you are right.
You absolutely had the right to refuse to continue with the procedure, and from what you have said...I would have done exactly what you did.
If someone makes constant mistakes while taking your blood, this can lead to HUGE issues on your part...which they won't pay to rectify.
You did the right thing, and screw what the Phleb thought.
It's worth knowing that to be a phleb, you only need Medical Terminology (1 credit hour), phlebotomy (3 credit hours) and english 101 (3 credit hours). Phlebs are the LOWEST trained and most incompetently trained individuals in the medical profession.

Plasma donors. Did you have difficulties with your veins collapsing when you first started donating?
I have donated plasma 3 times in the last few weeks. Every time, the machine shuts down repeatedly because my vein keeps collapsing. They assured me this is normal. Did this happen to anyone else and if so, how many times did you donate before it stopped?
Plasam Centers use 17 or 16 guage needles, yes, they are huge. The reason they use such big needles is becuase it is easy and painless to return red blood cells to the donor. Taking blood is one thing, returning it is a whole other issue.
To return Red Blood cells you need a wide guge opening on the needle. This eliminates pain, and time.
If your vein is collapsing while during plasampheresis it is because your veins are too small to hold the pressure. The pressure is from the return cycle (the cycle that returns your red blood cells, there is about 4 cycles).
Plently of donors experience this. Besides the above mentioned, there is other reasons why this can happen.
Veins collapsings are almost always casued by infiltration. The needle passed through your vein, and not directly into it. This causes swelling and brusining, and it gets very sore.
Second, movement of arm during plasmapheresis. If you have small veins, and the phlebotomist sticks you, all it takes is a small movement for the needle to pop through the vein. Then you have the above mentioned. You will not know thi happened until about 5 min later. Your arm will swell and get sore.
Plasmapheresis is very safe. The draw backs are what you are asking about. Veins collapsing are not very common. The needle is big, but people get INFILTRATION and COLLAPSING mixed up. 99% of the time it is infiltration.
Infiltration is caused by human error and small veins. Your Plasma center should have a poilcy, set forth by the FDA and SOP, that will tell you if you are not suitable as an applicant donor based on your veins.
The machine is going into NO FLOW mode. This measn it will not draw any RBC from you to extract plasma from. It has detected an error. (Hence the needle not in your vein, but popped out the other side). This is good. The machine has no fluid going through the optic sensor, and decided to stop plasmapheresis until the problem is fixed. Sometimes, an adjustment by the Phlebotomist can be done. A restick might me an option also.
Most Plasma center will not restick you after the first one, unless you have donated several times, and show that the problem is an employee.
The machine you are on is called a PCS2 machine. It is about $50,000. It shuts down for the reason you are asking the question. It has a now flow, and stops drawing blood.
