Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation or LASER is actually a device that generates or produces a highly concentrated coherent and monochromatic beam of light. The system of stimulated emission is used in the production of the light. It is one of the best ways of generating light.
There are various types of lasers that are used for laser cutting. Among them, CO2 laser is one of the most common types of lasers. Many companies that specialize in laser cutting technology use this type of laser to make things easy. It is actually a kind of gas laser and is used in welding. It has the ability to emit a maximum of hundred kilowatts at 10.6 and 9.6 µm and of cutting 1 millimeter-thick material in just a minute.
Cutting with laser has become quite popular in sheet metal fabrication. By aiming the energy generated from the high-power laser, cutting is done. Small portion of the object is cut by this process. Before cutting it a small portion is pierced. A cut is done either by moving the object when the laser is kept still or by shifting toward the material being cut. All these are done from the small hole.
One can apply both these strategies. But it is better to consider the pros and cons of these methods before opting for one. The laser's temperature rises when the beam of light strikes the part of the material or object. It causes the material to evaporate burn or melt even without enough amount of heat. Laser power requirements are not the same with all the materials. All the materials do not need the same amount of laser power. More laser power is required for the thicker materials. On the other hand, thinner materials require lesser laser power. Generally the carbon dioxide laser cutting or CO2 laser cutting is done with one thousand to one thousand five hundred watts. Materials like steel require more than 2 KW.
