Both CD & DVD drive stopped working on Sony Desktop?

I don't know if it's a hardware of software problem.

The drives will open, but they just make a noise like they're trying to read the disc.

Checked cables, jumpers, all connections. They are seen in BIOS. Master/Slave set OK.

BIOS is set to boot from CD drive first, but yet it won't boot my XP install CD.

Taken the drives apart, cleaned lasers, but this wouldn't explain why BOTH drives stopped working.

Done BIOS update, uninstalled the drives from Device Manager, no yellow exclamation mark icons.

No disc burning software that would interfere is installed. Cleaned registry, Deleted Upper and Lower filters.

I don't think it's a hardware failure because they BOTH suddenly stopped working. And they are individual.

Haven't done any updates recently that may have caused this.

No viruses.

Hi, the easiest way to establish if the drives are faulty is to use one or both in another PC, or alternatively use a friends drive in your PC and see if it works.
If you do it the second way disconnect both of the existing drives before the test.

For further isolation tests you could also connect them one at a time via a USB to IDE adapter and see if they work that way, in case the controller on the mobo is faulty.

After doing these things you should be someway closer to isolating the fault.
