Data Matrix Barcodes
Two-dimensional barcodes are of two types, namely stacked and Data Matrix. A Data Matrix code is a high-density two-dimensional barcode that consists of white and black modules or cells that are arranged in squares or rectangles, representing either raw data or text. There is an even number of rows and columns that encode information digitally, and also have a system of in-built error correction techniques. The data encoded could be up to two kilobytes in size, and a typical data matrix symbol can store up to 2335 alphanumeric characters. A small 2mm or 3mm square can hold around 50 characters of data. Its ability to hold so much information is responsible for its increasing use in commercial applications for identification and “carrying” of data, without the requirement of access to the central database. The latest version of the data Matrix code to be used is the ECC200 that comes with complete error checking and correction algorithms. This enables even damaged codes to be read accurately. ECC 200 Data Matrix codes are created with the aid of laser marking and are also cost efficient. They enable unique product identification and tracking of the product throughout the manufacturing process, along he sales path and even at the after-sale warranty stages.
Data Matrix barcodes are most commonly used for very small items where space is the biggest constraint. They are being used for the ease of traceability they provide. The data Matrix code will store identity details like a unique serial number, the manufacturer’s ID and the part number. Such details restrict the counterfeit business and help in areas where tight quality controls exist. Hence Data Matrix have been selected for high security applications of the U.S. Ministry of Defense for identification of some of its assets procured for security services. The aerospace industry parts, weapons and components of major systems all require permanent data Matrix codes in compliance with the Military Standard 130.
Data Matrix codes are extremely popular in the U.S. and Europe where they are used for direct part marking and laser marking. Besides aerospace and defense, they are also used in the automotive and electronic industry for general logistics, document management applications, mobile marketing, postal and health services.
While Data Matrix barcodes can be read with only a twenty percent contrast ratio, a big limiting factor is the specialized scanners required for reading them and decoding the information contained in them. Ordinary linear barcode scanners cannot decode the information contained in Data Matrix code. They require laser or CCD camera technologies for scanning, and they can be printed with all types of professional thermal transfer barcode printer .
Data Matrix is considered to be the smallest and most dependable of barcode symbologies. When seen in comparison to other widely used symbologies, Data Matrix is found to be 30 times smaller than even a Code 39 barcode storing the same information. Poor resolution and scanning problems do not affect the reading of a Data Matrix barcode as it does other barcodes.
