Metalized Polyester Labels Meet Mil-Std-130N

The requirements for marking assets supplied to the Department of Defense are governed by MIL-STD-130N, and metalized polyester labels used for this purpose are required to meet this standard. At the highest level, the standard requires asset marking in the form of metal or plastic plates, bands, tags or labels. Metalized polyester labels meet this most basic requirement. Furthermore, the standard also states that the marking must be securely and permanently attached to the asset, able to survive harsh environmental conditions without detaching. The acrylic adhesive used on metalized polyester labels is able to withstand the harshest of conditions.

MIL-STD-130N allows the IUID to be machine-readable (MRI) or human-readable. Metalized polyester labels can be fabricated in both forms. In both cases, the information must be readable throughout the life of the asset. The clear over laminate on metalized polyester labels protects the text and characters from wear, guaranteeing the label meets the permanent readability condition.

Sans-serif font of at least 0.2 centimeters in size should be used for human-readable labels, which can be produced on metalized polyester labels. The quality of readability for machine readable labels are defined by a number of standards such as ISO or comparable AIM or SAE documents for bar codes and data matrix symbols. MH10.8.7 is the specified marking protocol, although the standard lists many exceptions, for example industry standards by the Air Transport Association and the Consumer Electronics Association override MH10.8.7 Regardless of the governing standard, all can be met using metalized polyester labels.

There is minimum information that must be included on an asset label in a specific arrangement, depending on if the item requires an IUID or is a non-IUID item, and whether the manufacturer is the ODA (Original Design Activity) or the CDA (Current Design Activity). This includes the Enterprise Identifier (EID) of the supplier and the Part Identifying Number (PIN). A traceable number such as a serial number is also required, although the specifications for IUID assets are complex. The size of the label must be sufficient to present all identifiers in a readable format. Metalized polyester labels can be produced in a variety of sized to accommodate these information requirements.

Furthermore, items that do fall under this standard must meet numerous other standards or specifications that are detailed in MIL-STD-130N.
