[Optics] Interference?
The optical device used to detect the etch pattern in current CD-ROM readers is a solid-state laser operating at a wavelength of 675 nm. A good deal of maney has been spent on developing a blue laser with a wavelength of 450 nm for such purposes. Explain why there is such commercial interest.
To oversimplify a little: the smaller the wavelength, the more data you can put on a CD-ROM or DVD.
Think of it this way: you can write more characters on a piece of paper with a fine point pen than you can with a blunt crayon... Although exaggerated, the point remains the same with the 450nm blue laser compared to the 675nm laser...

I have a laser diode that I extracted from a CD player for a project. but I don't know what kind of laser diode its is, nor do I know how many mw it is. The things i can tell you are that on the laser diode etched in tiny type was

it is tiny, and it has a ring of metal at the bottom that looks like bronze and the rest looks like silver. Please help!!!
It is a near-IR laser (almost visible red light), rated at between 2 and 5 milliWatts.
If the CD unit can burn CDs, then it would be rated for a lot more power.
