How find the wavelength and the color of the light?

1) When listening to a radio station broadcasting at 101 MHz ( 101 million waves per second) you wonder how long the wavelength of these waves is. What is the answer and how does it compare to your height?

2) The frequency associate with a laser used for engraving is 2.4 c 10^14 Hz. What is the wavelength of this light? Can you see the light from the laser and if you can what color is it?

3) Light of wavelength 560 nm travels through a 1- cm vacuum gap.

(a) How many wavelengths fit into the gap?

( b) How long does it take the light to travel the gap?

4) The Hydra galaxy is moving away from Earth at 6.0 x 10^7 m/s. What fraction of the speed of light is this?

We will use this equation a lot, so remember it

velocity = frequency * wavelength

1) use the equation.
Rearrange so you have wavelength = velocity / frequency
the velocity of a radio broadcast is the same as the speed of light
speed of light = c = 3 x 10^8 ms^-1

2) use the equation.
then use this site to see which colours have which frequencies

3) a) simply divide your total width over the width of one wavelength
dont forget about the units being used, so you should get
1cm / 560nm == (1 x 10^-2)metres / (560 x 10^-9)metres

b) now we use another equation that you should be familiar with
speed = distance / time
rearrange to get, time = distance / speed
speed = c = 3 x 10^8 ms^-1
distance = 1 x 10^-2 m

4) fraction of speed of light = speed / speed of light = (6 x 10^7) / (3 x 10^8)

You should go through this doing the calculations as you go so you can understand better.
