The big industrial CO2 lasers used for cutting steel and most common engineering materials are usually in the range of one to 5 kilowatts. They emit 10.6 micron infra-red which is way too long a wavelength for the human eye or even most infra-red cameras to see. It is the within the range of wavelengths as thermal imaging cameras use. You can feel these wavelengths with your skin as heat. If you put your hand or face near an open fire or electric radiator you will feel this.
Any stray infra-red from an industrial co2 laser will burn the human eye or any part of the human body it touches very rapidly, even if the machine is throttled back to as little as 100 Watts. When the beam is spread out a bit (unfocused) It will leave white marks on the skin which are caused by turning the skin surface instantly to ash. If you get your fingers in the way of the focused beam it will punch holes in them. Believe me, it hurts either way.
Eyes are easily protected by any sort of lens as all common lens materials are opaque to 10.6 the micron wavelength. Even the eye itself is opaque at this wavelength, so that if you do shoot yourself in the eye you get surface burning leading to cataracts, rather than damage to the retina.
Classes of lasers are to do with how dangerous the laser beam is. Industrial cutting lasers are as dangerous as a laser can get but more people are killed by electric shock from the high voltage power supplies that these machines have than are seriously injured by the beam itself.
