Laser Cutting Tables

Does anyone know the name of this book?

I read it (it's a series) when I was younger. They were new to our library (2oo3/o4) and I was the first to read them. All I can remember is that I really liked the story line and the imagery, and my clue to people who might know what this is: In the beginning of the first book there is a guy laying on a table with an automated laser above him. He is restrained and the laser cuts away his skin in small square intervals. I remember that he stays alive, and skinless through the series. I also remember something about them being trapped on an automated future-technologic ship that has gone awry and is trying to kill the passengers.

Name of 80's sci-fi movie?

what's the 80s (I think) sci-fi movie about volunteer space colonists who go to settle on a very distant planet. At the very beginning, the guy and his kid brother have lunch at a restaurant where the food pops up out of the middle of the table. Sometime after launch, the colonists run into a burned out space ship with one survivor, a scruffy looking crazy guy who knows how to build some sort of laser belt weapon. This guy cleans up, joins the crew, and eventually is forced into a cage death match against some sort of space pirates or something. His laser belt thing saves the day for him and the colonists continue onward toward that planet. At some point, they run into the aliens or whatever. That's when my tape cut off. Does it ring a bell for anyone? I remember it was a super-cool movie; I'd love to see it again.
