What is the best way to create an steel bar with an octagonal cross section?

In terms of money I mean. For example, you could make a bar, and machine it, but that would create steel waste, as would laser cutting, and cold drawing (I think). If you have to cut parts of the steel off, and throw those away, that's like throwing away money (isn't it?).

Is there a way where you could make this shape without wasting steel? Or would the machine required to create the steel in such a way be so expensive that I should not worry about the waste from the machining/cutting etc?

I need the cheapest way to create a steel bar which has an octagonal cross section. Please help!

If you are making one bar, machine it from stock. If you are making production volumes, steel casting. Forge after casting if you need added strength.

The scrap to go from round bar stock to octagon would only be significant in large scale manufacturing.

If it needs to be precision sized, it will need finish machining and grinding.

What is the price range for a laser cutting machne that cuts 1/2" mild steel?

just looking for the price range of a laser cutting machine that can cut 1/2" mild steel without having to debur the pieces?
i am aware of the responses thus far... i was looking for an answer that might narrow it down to the tens of thousands. Specifically, i was wondering if there is a laser costing in the $150K range that can cut 1/2" mild steel... Thank's for your responses...

Kerry is probably correct.

My friend has a laser engraver that will cut sheet aluminum and brass, and it cost about $20,000. So, based on that I would imagine a more powerful, larger machine would easily be 10x the cost of his engraver.
