Laser Cutting Co2 Lasers Health Risk: Fumes from laser melted PMMA?
I am currently testing whether or not acrylic/PMMA can be vector cut with a CO2 laser, while maintaining the small feature sizes of the desired patterns (i.e. minimize melting).
Doing so has produced very unpleasant fumes, and I'm beginning to worry about my health. Does anyone know how inhaling these fumes may affect my health? There is no dust generated like there is when cutting PMMA, but do the fumes themselves put me in danger?
Thanks.
You should contact the manufacturer of the sheet / cutting machine, they will have a technical service contact who would be able to best advice you re if any local extraction is required etc / best operating practises for the laser etc
If its clear cast acrylic (note there are many different types but cast is best) then its made from PMMA
When heated by a laser it can decompose to MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) which is not toxic but does have a smell to it. This can further decompose to CO, CO2 and water. However also depends on what else is in the sheet, if its coloured will contain pigments or dyes.
Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the laser, this outreach book addresses all end-users of the technology, including non-scientists, at a time when photonics are becoming increasingly important in many areas. The very well known and reputable researchers and experts in the field adopt an intuitive approach by explaining the potential of the laser and its many applications in the fields of medicine and surgery, telecommunications, data communication and storage, ultrafast lasers, scanner, pointers, imaging, lithography and metrology, materials processing and machining, astronomy, etc.A dedicated webpage run by the authors includes links to new inventions, laser companies, and quizzes for self-testing.
This book describes the fundamental principles of the laser and the propagation of laser radiation in bulk and guided wave components. All solid state, gas, and semiconductor lasers are analyzed as macroscopic devices with susceptibility originating from quantum mechanical interactions. Additional analysis of the unique properties of coherent laser light in optical components is derived from fundamental principles.

This book provides a thorough account of the current status of achievements made in the area of soft X-Ray laser source development and of the increasingly diverse applications being demonstrated using such radiation sources. There is significant effort worldwide to develop very bright, short duration radiation sources in the X-Ray spectral region - driven by the multitude of potential applications in all branches of science. This book contains updates on several different approaches for comparative purposes but concentrates on developments in the area of laser-produced plasmas, whereby transient population inversion and gain between ion states is pumped by optical lasers interacting with pre-formed plasmas. Topics covered will include Laser-driven XRLs, Collisional XRLs, Recombination XRLs, Transient Inversion Collisional XRLs, Optical Field Ionization XRLs, Alternative XRL, pumping schemes Theory and simulations of XRL gain media and beam properties High order harmonic sources of XUV radiation, Free-electron lasers and other accelerator based X-Ray sources, X-Ray Laser drives, X-Ray optics and instrumentation Spectroscopy, and other diagnostics of laser media Applications of XRLs.
Brazilian funk carioca group Bonde do Rolê have been amusing and entertaining audiences worldwide ever since DJ-extraordinaire/tastemaker Diplo discovered the trio in their home country and signed them to his fledgling label, Mad Decent, in 2006. While Bonde do Rolê's earlier work was known for its gratuitous use of easily recognizable samples with lead MC Marina Ribatski's vocals chanted over, on their debut full-length With Lasers, the band uses a live guitarist to re-create the feel of '80s hair metal that infiltrates tracks like the first single "Office Boy," the harder "Bondallica," and "Dança do Zumbi." Diplo's own eclectic touch is definitely felt, as the album meanders about through techno, early-'90s dance pop, soca, and, of course, samba. This isn't "traditional" funk carioca, or baile funk, but it's a fun, danceable hybrid of beats that are catchy and to the point. "Solta o Frango" combines playground-esque sing-songy vocal lines with keyboard bleeps and Brazilian rhythms; it's short -- as are most of the tracks on the record -- clocking in at just a little over two minutes, but that's part of Bonde do Rolê's appeal: they're not going to drag things out with interminable percussive breaks and breakdowns. Instead, they're about celebrating their youth and impatience, moving onto the next thing before the first one is even done but maintaining an exuberant consistency throughout With Lasers' entirety. From the low brass riffs in "Marina Gasolina" to their take on a spy theme in "James Bonde" to the raw vocals on the kazoo-laden "Geremia" to the very M.I.A.-ish "Marina do Bairro," the band spits and struts their way with confidence, energy, and a lot of style. With Lasers is definitely the kind of sexy, summer music that probably won't, like most trends of its kind, be a record that will last for years and years, but while it's hot, while it's out, while it's banging out the stereo onto the scorched pavement around it, take advantage of it. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi Performers: DJ Chernobyl - Vocals; Freddie Van Halen - Guitar; Nando Endres - Bass
In this monograph, the authors address the physics and engineering together with the latest achievements of efficient and compact ultrafast lasers based on novel quantum-dot structures and devices. Their approach encompasses a broad range of laser systems, while taking into consideration not only the physical and experimental aspects but also the much needed modeling tools, thus providing a holistic understanding of this hot topic.

Laser Cutting Machinery
The laser cutting machines are those based on lasers and are used for industrial purposes. The laser cutting machines are in full demand; it is used in different disciplines for its never-ending advantages. The laser cutting machines have been used for different purposes in the developing countries, it is simple machinery that works on the remote of the laser by the computer on the material that is to be treated. There are many types of laser machines that are utilized in factories and industries.
The laser machines are enhanced and are dominant over mechanical machines. It is because at some situations these two work differently and the laser machines are found more appropriate to use rather the mechanical machines. But there is one disadvantage of laser machines that it needs a lot of high energy. There are different types of laser machines, the CO2 state laser and the YAG state lasers are used for cutting, along with welding, drilling, treatments of surface and marking purposes. The CO2 lasers include commonly the axial flow, slow axial flow and the fast axial flow. The common method of CO2 laser is that it is pumped through a blend of gases known as the DC Excited method. But the new formula known as the RF method is popular and is more adopted.
It is because the DC method required situations that created problems in the electrodes, where as the RF method include the external electrodes and this didn't created any problems. The laser works in an accurate manner, its cutting is performed by the axis of the beam at the point it is denoted, in case if the cutting area is to be performed from some other place then piercing is done which varies in the conditions what is to be pierced like the stainless steel of half inch thickness need 5 to 15 seconds to get pierced. The laser machinery has three different configurations, which are used commonly in the industries. These are moving material Flying Optics and Hybrid. Thus laser cutting machinery is adopted in almost every developed country is a machinery of new age.
The laser cutting machinery is used not only in fieldwork it is now chipped to small utility purposes as well. Operators of fewer skills in industries can use laser-cutting machinery and any person who knows well about the processing can fulfill the minor purposes. The laser cutting machineries where have so much benefits has some points to be remembered and taken care of. The laser cutting machinery should be prevented from dust and misusage. It is the work of experts and for those who handle it with care. The laser cutting machinery is kept at a reserving place where no there is no other chemical treatments done.
The laser cutting machinery has high potency and can live for long time, it is only when it is taken complete care. The laser cutting machinery according to its types varies in economical aspect. Many companies tend to get less priced laser machines but their results remains in doubt, where as if once bought at high price the laser cutting machinery pays back the best results and gives profit to its owner.
The laser machines are exported and imported to different countries, as some countries like Japan are famous for its built in machinery.
