in what milling operations are helical milling cutters used?

Helical milling cutters are used when milling wide surfaces. For 2 reasons:
1. The swarf is cleared better from the cutting edge.
2. The main one! If you were to do a wide cut with a straight tooth cutter, each tooth will be operating practically independently. The result is rather severe rattling and very uneven loading on the machine bearings. Using helical teeth provides a more continuous load and a side shear action for the cutter. Much quieter, too.
In very wide surface milling, the cutters are usually ganged and matched for diameter. But helixes may be opposed, to minimise or eliminate end thrust on the milling shaft.
Operations in a vertical head or horizontally mounted endmilling operation are invariably spiral toothed cutters.
Cutters for such as keyways etc. are generally straight tooth (except in endmilling). However some may have each other tooth angled the opposite way, to aid in load sharing and swarf clearance.
