How to Carve Bone?

The use of bone goes back to the Old Stone Age where early man made use of bones to carve jewelry, tools, weapons, needles and other utilities/ figurines etcetera. Bone has been the most treasured forms of carvings since they are intricate, flawless and nothing in comparison to even statues made from granite.

 

Before you begin to carve a bone, you need to have certain items at hand. Here is a look at the things that are needed to carve bone:

 

1. Animal Bone.
2. Chisels used for engraving.
3. A Scraper.
4. Knife meant for etching.
5. Mat made from leather.
6. Coping saw.
7. Sandpaper for filing.
8. Dremel tool or a compact hand drill.
9. A course triangle and a round course file.
10. Protection for the eye and a mask preferably.

 

The first thing before you decide to start the bone carving is to trace a design on paper; since you can do various designs on all the sides of the bone and it is a dimensional work of art; take three different designs for all the sides of the bone.

 

To get the bone ready for carving: you first have to wash and clean the bone thoroughly. Remember to wash it completely devoid of any bone marrow or flesh that is stuck to it. This is important as it will help you to carve the bone better. Soak the bone in soapy water which is nice and hot for a full day. Then remove it and let it dry. Saw it down to the requirements of your design. If you are making tiny figurines or chess pieces you many need to saw it down a little more for the intended shape and size.

 

Spread your leather mat on the place you intend starting your work and keep all the required tools at hand. Using the etching knife and the gravers, gently carve the smaller aspects of the design. This will help you get the knack and practice, by using the filing tools gently file away at the edges and start shaping the bone to get the outline of the design. Keep repeating the procedure until you get the complete design on all the sides of the bone. After the design is complete; use sandpaper and sand down your bone. Now you are all set to display your creation and this can be an ideal hobby for the children on vacation or a great gifting solution.
