How To Hand Print From Copper Plates?

I have a number of 1800's engraved copper plates from the civil war period. I am interested in having prints made from these plates. Is it possible to hand print from these? If so what equiment do I need? Where can I locate it?

Interesting. No, you can't hand print. These are more than likely line etchings which require a tremendous amount of pressure from an intaglio press. They're heavy all metal affairs which can only be worked by hand. Usually they're found in art schools where a printmaking course is offered or printmakers' workshops have presses on offer for a fee. You also want to check if a line has been drawn across the plate signalling it had it's run and therefore the line quality is now less than pristine nor suitable for continued printing. Usually, about a two hundred print run on most 18 gauge half hard copper plates. The back might have a protective backing or was walled up
around the edges and the mordant poured directly on the plate to bite instead of the plate lowered into the bath. Look for numbers, hand written names or the like. Antique auctioneers would also be interested. Check the net first for such or PBS. If the ink has been allowed to dry in the incised linework ( An abominable practice ) then you further will not be able to print without cleaning which may further damage the linework. Transferware ceramic pottery is a beautiful addition to any tableware collection and an extremely popular collector’s item.
