i bought a winchester canadian centennial with the octagon barrel?

i just bought a winchester canadian centennial with the octagon barrel for 300.00 was that a good deal. also i was wondering if anyone can give me a date it was made the serial number is 70161. it has gold inlays on the engraving's and all the writing that is on the gun. all help would be greatly appreciated. also would it hurt the value of the gun if i put sling mounts on it to make it easier to carry.
just to let everyone know i found one of my old gun books and going by the serial number the gun was made in 1896 thanks for all the help. if you have any additional info please let me know

Trust me, you got a great deal for $300. You can't even buy a good "standard" used Winchester model 94 for $300 these days.

The only thing I will say is that if you do not have the box and paperwork, it won't be much of a collector's item. So, if it is just the rifle alone, have some fun with it and go out and shoot and hunt with it. Chances are, you won't find many other hunters in the woods with a nice rifle as that.

The thing is, most if not all of those so-called "collectors" Winchesters are just not going to be worth much more than the standard rifles down the road. This is because Winchester made waaay too many of the guns over the years; Buffalo Bill Commemorative, Annie Oakly, Chief Crazy Horse, John Wayne, Golden Spike, Canadian Centennial, Boy Scouts of America....those are just a few that flood into my mind. They made tens of thousands of each of those, so the total output might be well over a million in just the commemorative circles. So, use it, enjoy it.

What do people do with those fancy engraved and plated guns?

Ya know like Sadams gold plated AK-47, and all those engraved revolvers people seem to have. I've also seen pictures of gold plated Desert eagles.

Apparently people don't shoot these guns, what exactly do they do with them?

I am in the business of selling guns and I guess people just collect them. A gun is a great investment if you are not gonna shoot it, they just increase in value the older it gets.

  1. I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me $50.26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, that paid me $193 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with $500 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.
