How are laser engraved 3-D glass cubes made?

I understand laser technology is used to make 3-D glass cubes. What I don't know is how it is done.

The Lazer uses coordinates that are shot inside the cube (Multi-photon absorption)these shots cause a tiny crack which when multiplied tens of thousands of times form the image you see with out damaging the outside of the cube. The cube is made of optical crystal.
