How do I do detail painting on metal? Specific circumstances and details.?

I have a peice of metal with some letter engraving in it. I want to paint in this text so it will show more. Give it a kinda contrast. To give an example as to what it is its kinda like an old metal display panel. Where the text would be imprinted in the metal then detail painted. But I am unsure what type of paint to use and the method. I do have a general idea though. This surface will also be in contact with strong cleaning solvents and oils but not constantly so the paint will have to withstand these chemicals.
I don't think I was clear enough.

The text is the size of handwriting. Which means I would have to paint the area around the text then wipe the paint no in the engraved text away. I have seen this method before. And the metal is already pakerized.

though the airbrush with auto paint is good idea, you want the paint, but not coverage,
you could use paint but then you want to squeegee, and sponge of excess except for text,

it may depend on type of metal, as well, if brass or stainless steel, as opposed to iron, aluminum,
you don't want paints or inks that will corrode surface,

you want to fill etching / engraving / lithograph like that of a plaque or tombstone, with paint or ink ,
you want to use squeegee or rubber / plastic edge like those use in silk screening,
you apply ink into groves, then scrape surface and remove excess ink or paints,
carefully go over with sponge or cloth for minor spots,
let dry and seal or, depending on what you use, be able to re-apply later when damage occurs,

there is shoe polish and gun bluing, silkscreen inks, auto motive paints, house paints,
you could seal with lacquer, or leave as is, and re clean and apply years later,
