What should I engrave on my boyfriends Valentine's Day gift? Our real names or our nicknames?

I'm getting my boyfriend and I matching dog tags for Valentine's Day. I don't know if I should engrave our full names or our nicknames. For example Josh instead of Joshua and Jen instead of Jennifer. Or vice-versa? What do you think would be nicer? Thanks for your opinions.

You should always engrave names that you would most commonly go by (around each other). If you call each other Jen and Josh then this is what you should get engraved. Avoid nick names used in private, like Schmoopy, on anything you want him to wear in public.

Whenever you are getting something engraved it is important to consider what the recipient would like most. Dog tags are very popular but you do not want to have anything engraved that your boyfriend might find embarrassing. Consider getting a tag engraved on both sides, one with something he would like and the reverse with your personal message.

You know your boyfriend's personality best so the engraving should be something meaningful to him. For example, a song lyric would be great if he is a music lover. If he is not, then think about his hobbies or interests and use them as your basis for inspiration. Many people want a dog tag to represent something important to them. I have seen poker players wear dog tags with the Ace of Spades and sports fanatics wear dog tags with their favorite sports team. Make your engraving special to him and then put your names, 'Te Amo' or the day you started dating on the reverse as a reminder of the gift giver.

You may also want to consider buying a dog tag from a jeweler or specialty store that already has a graphic (team logo, etc.) on it and then submit the tag to an engraver to be personalized for you. This way you can get a dog tag specific to your boyfriends interests and save money over getting two sides of the tag engraved.
