Engraving Rubber

wiccans, athame question?

i bought an athame online. one of my books says that I have to do something to it to infuse it with my energy. (since it was store bought, and not hand made by me personally.)
is this true?
If so, what can i do to it?
(this athame is made of metal, so engraving might be a problem. the handle is like a hard, black rubber.) any suggestions?
also, what about the wand? I bought one of those online too. but all my books say that i have to carve it myself. can i still use this wand?

My athame is deer footed, so have never ever engraved it and wouldn't dream of so doing. You could paint on symbols (do you know what they mean?) with say, silver paint, and then varnish over them, though I don't know what that would do to rubber.

It is highly unlikely that MANY if ANY of the working tools used these days are made by the users. We don't have the abilities, or the tools..

For example (not all of these are Working Tools)

Athame - made for me by dear departed friend
Cauldron - bought at a car boot sale, cleaned and painted with metal paint
Wand - have several - very rarely use one only one made by me
Broomstick:made by Forestry Commission employees and bought.
Chalice - have several - best one is a large wineglass decorated by a friend who is rather arty
Sword - bought.
Cords - bought
White handled knife - made to match my athame - bought
Staff - made by friend, bought from stall at a conference

As Crystal said above, and I and others have said before, tools are nice to have but not essential. The intent, the focus, the power, the need, the desire, comes from within, the tools are just that, tools, aids to help you. Books that tell you you have to make them, are living in a fantasy land, imo of course!! LOL!!

If you want to add something of yourself to the tools, apart from use, then decoration is the key....personalise them in some way.

You get fond of working tools over time, and can end up with a collection that can be hard to explain away - how many swords does a 21st century urbanite need?!!

It's a signature engraved on a rubber stamp. They use it on documents instead of hand signing.
