Why were pipe organs so huge back then?

I mean, they are called grand pipe organs for a reason. It has been stated that they were one of the most difficult musical instruments to make before the industrial revolution came out, well look how huge they were. I mean they can have up to like 33,000 pipes! Thats ALOT of pipes! This just surprises me. I mean the older organs are so beautiful when you look at them, like come on you can tell they have alot of history to them just by looking at all the wood work and detail engraved in. Its just I wonder why they were so huge back then, I mean you figure all the years of work put into them and all the pipes they had to souder in.

The answer is "resonance". Pipe organs work by resonating air in partly closed pipes. The length (and diameter) of these pipes is what produces the various tones. Each pipe produces only one tone (note) so you need a lot of pipes to cover a decent tonal range. The very big pipes are the ones that produce the lowest notes and it's these that give the pipe organ it's distinctive sound. Some of the very big ones produce notes so low (in the tens of cycles per second) that they make your whole body vibrate - and that's the effect the designers wanted.
