Engraving Masters
why did people like the "Master Engraved Plates" so much by albercht DURER?
Are you referring to Durer's contemporaries? If so, there were several reasons why his work was so greatly admired, besides sheer skill, imagination, and high level of naturalistic detail.
One is that he brought together northern European printmaking approaches and Italian classicism. He spent much time traveling in Italy and was therefore able to synthesize Renaissance classicism and the greater naturalism of the North. Northern artists could, in some respects, regard Durer's prints, which could be passed around for study, as a kind of portable art school.
A printmaker's works, by the way, can be seen by many people, they also cost less than paintings and sculpture. One reason for Durer's popularity is that his prints were relatively accessible.
Another was the breadth and range of his subjects. He did not confine himself to religious motifs but was interested in the natural world and in philosophical/intellectual matters. Among affluent and educated connoisseurs of the period, this was particularly interesting.
Finally, as I noted above, there is fact that Durer was simply very highly skilled as an artist and very imaginative -- much more so than many other contemporary northern artists.
