I just bought 5 Engraving of Fox hunters on horses and the tails were all trimmed. The engravings are from the late 1880's so it must have been something they did during that period because i don't see any horses like that now. What hair from the horse was used for Horsehair Plaster?
Docking a horses tail is cutting the bone to shorten it just as is done with dogs. It was done with heavy carriage horses to keep their tails from the harness lines and in farm dray animals to keep their tails from the machinery. Docking is still done on draft animals but it does cause pain and keeps the animal from using its tail for fly protection. For this reason many countries have made it illegal.
Banging the tail is cutting all the hair to the same length as the natural tail. This is still a common practice in hunting classes at horse shows. Here is how to properly trim the tail hair.
The plaster used long, strong hair from animal hides where readily available or even chopped straw if hair was not used. Here is a picture of the hair bundles to be used in lime plaster mixes.
