| | A Grammar of Old English (Paperback) $100.64 First published in 1992, A Grammar of Old English, Volume 1: Phonology was a landmark publication that in the intervening years has not been surpassed in its depth of scholarship and usefulness to the field. It is designed to take account of major developments both in the field of Old English studies and in linguistic theory. Taking full advantage of the Dictionary of Old English project at Toronto, the book includes full cross-references to the DOE data, and items which are not in the Toronto databases are specially indicated. This volume fully utilizes work in phonemic and generative theory and related topics, and it provides material which could be crucial for future research both in diachronic and synchronic phonology and in historical sociolinguistics. Volume II: Morphology completes the two-volume analysis of the sounds and grammatical forms of the Old English language. Initiated by Richard Hogg, and revised and completed by R.D. Fulk, this volume incorporates insights derived from recent theoretical and technological advances, focusing on the morphological structure of Old English words. Most helpful in this regard is the use of digital resources, foremost of which are databases compiled by the Dictionary of Old English project at the University of Toronto. Hogg and Fulk explore the separation of diachronic and synchronic considerations in the frequently complex analysis of noun morphology. This volume also includes extensive bibliographical coverage of Old English morphology, and consideration of recent controversies in Germanic linguistics, particularly in the treatment of verbs. Both volumes are included in this set.  They offer rich and rewarding insights into an important branch of linguistics relating to the development of an early form of the English language and are essential for scholars in the field. |

| | The Old English Baron (Paperback) $6.91 The Old English Baron is an ambitious rewriting of Horace Walpole`s Castle of Otranto, transporting the trappings of the Gothic to medieval England. The noble hero endures many adventures of romantic horror in order to obtain his rightful heritage, and the story concludes with a dramatic day of retribution. Reeve`s book is increasingly recognized as a major influence in the development of Gothic fiction. When Sir Philip Harclay returns to England after a long absence, he finds that his childhood friend, Arthur, Lord Lovel, is no longer alive, and that the castle and estates of the Lovel family have twice changed hands. But a mysteriously abandoned set of rooms in the castle promises to disclose the secrets of the past. After a series of frantic episodes and surprising revelations, culminating in a trial by combat, the crimes of the usurper and the legitimacy of the true heir are finally discovered. The Old English Baron or "the literary offspring of the castle of Otranto", as Reeve described it, provides an ambitious rewriting of Horace Walpole`s groundbreaking work, transporting the trappings of the Gothic to medieval England. Innovative and original in its day, Reeve`s historical romance is increasingly recognized as a major influence on the development of Gothic fiction. |

| | A Gentle Introduction to Old English (Paperback) $23.76 "If the magister in Ælfric`s Colloquy shows himself more than willing to apply the rod, teachers of Old English today, one hopes, have carrots to entice modern students, as well as sticks with which to discipline them. Murray McGillivary`s Gentle Introduction to Old English brings a refreshing perspective on the traditional carrots (actual Old English readings) and sticks (paradigms to memorize) that have long characterized the teaching of Old English. McGillivray`s approach should ease modern students into the grammatical paradigms of Anglo-Saxon that have long frightened many a beginning learner of the language. And the readers who make it to the end will have also made it through the whole of Ælfric`s Colloquy, having enjoyed the rewards of the reading while enduring less pain from the paradigms themselves than many an earlier generation of students."---Thomas Bredehoft, West Virginia University"This timely and welcome textbook fields the neglected middle ground where twenty-first-century students of Old English increasingly huddle: eager, culturally savvy, but unaware of the rudiments of linguistic terminology, even if they have fluency in modern languages. This introduction is not a petting zoo of artificial, defanged texts along the lines of otherwise excellent introductions of fifty years ago; rather, it anticipates students` most frequently asked questions and organizes the syntactic and morphological fauna with which they most need to be acquainted before going on safari in the next generation of edited texts."---Mary Blockley, University of Texas At AustinThis book is designed to ease the beginner into the competent reading of Old English texts. It presents the essential points of Old English grammar and also includes a selection of short, relatively simple original-language texts, glossed and annotated. Numerous practice exercises are also included throughout. A companion website includes additional interactive exercises, pronu |
