We borrowed an engraver from the police and...?

We were using it on plastic, which we were allowed to do, but we went too far in and now the tip of the engraving pen has plastic stuck to it. We tried to pick it off but it's not coming off, and we tried writing still in hope of it coming off but it didn't work! How can we get rid of it?

Hold it (just the tip) over a lighter until the plastic becomes a liquid, then wipe it off.
Wear gloves to prevent burns and try not to inhale the fumes.
