How would i paint metal???????

i need to make a piece of pipe about 10" long and i need to paint it with a specific pattern. what paint would i use? should i etch the outlines of the pattern with a metal engraver to make it easier?

I'm not sure what type of pipe,but you need to make sure it's not rusted or pitted.If It's in bad shape you will have to make sure it's a smooth surface.You can use a wire brush,sandpaper ect. If you have clean pipe you would want to sand it a little or ruff it up so to speak .Then you have to prime it with a good primer.This sound like an art project,so if you want it to last a long time the way you seal it or prime it is the most important thing!Once you get it primed you can pencil in your patterns. Engraving is okay too.I'm just trying to figure out your going to make a piece of pipe 10"long.I would sugest buying the pipe at your local pipeyard.lol just kidding.Hope I helped you with your project.

The best (cheap & simple) metal engraver...?

I'm just getting into metal jewelry, and I saw a man at the Farm Show with a little gun that buzzed and it would write into the metal...any idea what a good brand of gun is for this? cheap one? where can i buy them?

My father has an etcher. It is a little larger than a small soldering iron. He uses it to etch his name on tools and the like. He bought it at a store like Lowes for about $20. For that purpose it works very well. Etches most metals.

It would work for jewelry, but may not look especially good. I never tried it on any of the silver jewelry I have made. The common etching tools is not as precise as I would think you would want for engraving jewelry. Since the tool does not cost much, you could pick one up and give it a try on some scrape to see how you like the results. Don't want to wreck a good piece of jewelry while experimenting with it.
