What do I use to engrave for small jewellery making projects?

I make jewellery, and I would really like to engrave some of the things, like when people engrave quotes on Dog-tag style metal charms, and i've also seen it on small, plastic plectrum style charms. I've seen a Rolson Engraver on Ebay, and similar items, are they just for writing your name on in case items get lost? Or can you actually do a nice font with those? I've also seen Stamping kits? I'm not sure what that is. If anyone has any info on any of what i've mentioned that would be really great and I will reward best answer. Thanks in advance

Most jewelers use a pantograph that uses letter guide dies. A hand held engraver is difficult to use on extra small pieces. It took me many years of practice to do fine work on glass. I use a dremel, stones and diamond bits for the extra fine line work.
