Staining and protecting wood... as art?

My husband and I have a large flat piece of wood (about 30 x 35 inches, and maybe 1/2 inch thick, if that) A friend of ours had our last name burned into the center of it. At our wedding, we had a wood burner/engraver pen where the guest "signed" their name into the wood, all around our name in the middle. I would like to stain and or somehow protect and maybe even lacquer it to protect it, and eventually frame it. How do I go about doing this? I know nothing about wood or staining or protecting wood...especially to use as art on our wall. I don't remember what type of wood it is anymore (it's light in color) because it's been about 3 years, but when we went to the lumber yard at that time to pick it out, we told them what we intended to use it for, and it's the type of wood they had suggested for us to use.

This is an easy one. What a nice memento. Wood is tough and hanging in your home it won't need much protection. Got to the store and pick out a stain that you like or leave it the way it is. Try a sample of what you chose on the back side to see if you like it. (Wipe the spot after a minute to determine the color it will be.) To put on a top coat, we like polyurethane in a satin finish. Easy to put on, easy to clean up when you buy water based. I might be tempted to use a stain and wipe it off the parts of the wood that weren't written upon and leave it alone in the names area. This way they would stand out more. Follow the can's directions . Have fun.
