How do I get rid of a mouse or rat under the kitchen cabinets without hurting my kitten?

He seems to roam under the kitchen cabinets, starting about 8 in the evening, my five month old kitten bounds into the kitchen and watches the crack in the kitchen cabinet. I move the kitten out and he waits a few seconds and back he goes. I asked the landlord for a trap, he sends poison, I asked the maintenance man for a tin cutter to cut the lid from a large can and put around the pipe where rat climbs up in the space beside. He says can't you use a can opener. I really think this is the land lords job, and that I should not have to buy a trap, also afraid the kitten will try to squeeze in the cabinet door and get caught in the trap, would not a piece of tin around the pipe be better.
This is a cement block house and the only way the rat or mouse can get in is the pipe to the kitchen sink.

Buy a trap. This isn't a job for a landlord. Where I live they're 3/$1. Set it in the cupboard.

Even if he does get in the cupboard the trap won't cause him harm.
