Computerized Engraving Machines

What type of computerized machine could be used to cut and engrave plastic/wood?

I am looking for a machine that can hook up to my computer and cut custom pieces of acrylic or wood with a thickness of maybe a half inch. It also needs to be able to engrave. Does anyone know of any such machines?
i realize theyre a type of engraver, but does anyone know specifically what kind can cut wood and acrylic around a half inch thick or more? And what software would i need?
Most engravers aren't designed to cut materials due to the worktable underneath.
