Is there a program that can find the coordinates of different sections of an image?

I was planning to program a CNC code but the image I would like to engrave (and which I have to code for the program to run) I need exact coordinates. It would lead me to have human error and just inaccuracy if I used graph paper. I know Paint, Photoshop have X,Y coordinates but what are they are measured in and how can I convert that to inches? Is there a program which lays an image on graph paper or something in which it gives me a specific coordinate for a specific section of the image?

Download autotrace from sourceforge. It can turn your image into a vector format with pretty good accuracy. I'm sure one of those vector formats can be opened in your CNC prog.
