Does anyone know how to create a 256 bit gray scale image for a laser engraver or cnc machine?

I have been searching for SOFTWARE, or some one who knows how to prepare an image for a laser engraver or CNC machine into a 256 gray scale image.

What Kind of Material?

When engraving in grayscale 3D laser carving mode our experience is that maple, cherry, birch, butternut, alder, acrylic and MDF engrave well. Walnut, ash and faux marble may perform marginally and oak should be avoided. Don't try polycarbonate with a CO2 laser.

Use a minimum of 1/4" solid stock. No veneer or plywood. Glue-ups can cause irregular engraving across glue lines.

Keep the surface as free from defects - scratches, dents, tear-outs, etc. - as possible. Any defects will translate down into the engraving.

Try to engrave cross-grain. It will usually produce a smoother cut.

What settings should I use?

An engraving depth of 3/32" to 5/32" will give very good relief for the size of the images ordered from our Website. The larger the image is the more engraving depth is required to keep the engraving from 'flattening out'. Similarly, a scaled down smaller image will produce a greater relative engraving depth.

Start with a 300dpi engraver setting. Smaller systems (less than 75watt tubes) may need to use full power and a slower speed than usual. A second pass may be required. Increasing the engraver dpi to something greater than 300dpi may also help if needed. We use hard maple and a 100watt system to validate our artwork for a single pass.

Check with your equipment vendor to determine whether your system uses a bit-depth of 6 or 8 bits. Eight bits cuts to 256 levels of gray, while 6 bits cuts only 64 levels and may appear more stepped. All Gantry GrayGraphics artwork is provided at 256 levels of gray and is compatible with both 6 and 8 bit systems.

We suggest testing the linearity of the modulated laser output energy vs. the grayscale input. A white to black grayscale ramp should engrave as a nice flat ramp with no flattening out on either end. You can easily create a test file to do this or, if you request, with your first order we will be pleased to send you a small file that you can use - similar to the one shown here.

If files using cutting vectors (CV) are rescaled, you may want to readjust the distance of the cut from the edge of the engraving to maintain an approximately 0.006" kerf (the width of the material removed by the laser). Lens/focal length is also a factor.

Specific engraver settings are best gotten from your equipment vendor if needed, but usually a bit of trial and error can help you find the best settings for your system.

How can I clean the engraved piece?

After engraving the piece will have a coating of soot and creosote - how various vendors implement their exhaust system will affect how much of this residue remains. It can be cleaned using water and a toothbrush. On occasion it may help to use a wet/dry shop vacuum cleaner to suck out the remaining 'dirty' water and to dry the wood faster.

Design Software For CNC

What I used to do...

Before I found design software I was in the stone ages. I would actually hand lay out a template on a piece of paper. Then cut it out. Next, I would tape the design onto a piece of steel and trace around it with a Sharpe Marker. Finally, I would cut out the piece I wanted.

No matter what, it was never exact. There would always be something wrong. Things like wavy lines, gouges and "unique parts" were the norm. Measurements were never as exact as I would have liked either. That usually caused some fit-up issues, followed by some grinding. If you know anything about fabrication, grinding is the enemy of your time.

Why use Design Software?

I knew there had to be a better way so I found some design software to try out. Yes, it does take some time to learn. Think about it, like anything else in life, something that is worth it takes some time. This is also the situation of taking one step backwards to move ten steps forward.

Here are some advantages of using Design Software:

Saved file you can use over and over
Transfer the design to others
Can use exact measurements
Repeatability in design

Here are some disadvantages of using Design Software:

Cost money
Takes time to learn
May not be the quickest way of making something if it is a "One Off"

My Definition of Design Software

If you are an engineer, you will probably consider CAD Software as design software. That is true. But what I am talking about here is "Creative" Design Software. These software packages are used by creative types for print, web design and logo design. This software is great for creating designs that flow and are artistic in some way.

Design software can be boiled down to what it is good at. If you want to make a square with a hole in it or a triangular gusset, then CAD type design software works great. If you want to cut out a Cowboy on a Horse, then "Creative" Design Software is the only way to go.

Here are some examples of work for "Creative" Design Software:

Plasma Art
Router Art
Signs
Engraving

Every CNC machine has quirks that you need to learn. Every CNC machine has a different working envelope. Every CNC machine is just a little bit different then the rest of them. It is in your best interest to learn your machine before you put it to work.

Generally, with a CNC machine, we are machining something. While machining, "chips" are being thrown off. Sometimes at a very rapid speed. Here is where safety glasses, face shields and material barriers come into play. Use them! The machine doesn't know you are standing there. In the words of every boxing ref before a match, "protect yourself at all times!"
